Single-Subject Tutoring Single-subject tutoring -- for example, mathematics or English for the junior-high or high-school student, or general academic support for the elementary student: Fees for individual instruction are higher than group instructional fees because the teacher plans for and works with a single student. Sessions usually focus on helping the student master the concepts and skills of a single academic course in which the student is currently enrolled at school. Prior to the first lesson, there may be a conference (in person or by telephone) between the parent and the director. Before instruction can begin, however, the parent must complete a registration form -- a single sheet. There is a one-time-only registration fee of $18.00 to cover costs of setting up a file and arranging for instruction. Thereafter, if teaching is to begin, fees are based on the instructional hour or the time the teacher spends with the student. Most students are tutored once a week, but additional sessions may be arranged. All teaching takes place at the Lamplighter. The cost for single-subject tutoring is $30.00 per hour per individual student for grades 1 through 6, and $33.00 per hour per individual student for grades 7 through 12 and beyond. Payment is required the day of the lesson. The Lamplighter does not send statements. Payment by check is preferred over payment in cash because of the record-keeping advantages, but the Lamplighter will accept cash. If students pay in cash, they should always ask for a receipt. Students coming for a lesson are asked to sign in at the front desk and pay for the lesson prior to instruction. This practice enables us to keep good records and to see that students receive prompt attention. Appointment slips for the next lesson are on the study tables. If teachers forget to give the students appointment slips, students may make out their own and turn in the desk copy at the front desk. If necessary, cancellations can be made at no cost, with a day's notice. If progress is to be made, however, regular attendance is necessary. Because teachers often come for a single student, and because others may be waiting, we must have at least 24 hours' notice of any cancellation. This practice allows us to make the time available to another student. There is a $10.00 charge for "no-shows" or late cancellations. This $10.00 fee is due prior to the next lesson. The Lamplighter reserves the right to stop seeing students who have consistent no-shows or late cancellations. We are here to serve students who are serious in their commitment to their studies. Lamplighter academic teachers and specialists have experience in public or private schools. They are certified by the Department of Education, State of Ohio. Tutors are certified teachers with a minimum of a bachelor's degree. Specialists have earned a minimum of a master's degree. Occasionally, consultants with degrees in fields other than teaching may be asked to teach in their respective fields; however, all Lamplighter teachers/tutors are chosen for their commitment to students and to learning. We encourage good communication between parents and teachers. Parents wishing to talk with a teacher may do so a few minutes at the beginning of the instructional hour or just before the instructional hour is over. The director is also available to parents. |
