May 28, 10 AM - 5 PM Traditional Native American Pottery Watch Jim Jones of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe demonstrate making traditional Native American pottery. Try your hand at forming a clay pot. June 4, 10 AM - 8 PM Free as a Bird: Family Day at Jeffers Petroglyphs Enjoy free admission and experience the birds of Jeffers Petroglyphs! Local bird watchers lead walking tours searching for birds singing their prairie melodies. June 11, 10 AM - 8 PM Animals of the Prairie Visitors will learn about the prairie animals through illustrations, pelts, activities, and making plaster animal tracks. June 18, 10 AM - 8 PM Atlatl Day / Atlatl Competition Visitors new to the stone-age spear thrower called an atlatl can try their hand at throwing spears at life-sized buffalo and deer targets set in the prairie. They can also make their own atlatl at no extra charge. At 2 PM, there will be a primitive target competition, sanctioned by the Northern Plains Atlatl Association. Prizes will be awarded. June 25, 10 AM - 8 PM Tipi Discovery Day The American Tipi is a technological wonder. Warm, cool, dry, and mobile, it has protected people for centuries. Learn about how the tipi is made and put up through hands-on activities. Play Native American games in a tipi. July 7, 7 PM - 12 AM Starry Night, Prairie Night July 8, 7 PM - 12 AM July 9, 7 PM - 12 AM View the petroglyphs when they are best seen - at dusk. Enjoy a twilight prairie tour to leam about animals of the night. View and discuss both Native American and European constellations. View stars and planets through a telescope. July 16, 10 AM - 8 PM Buffalo Day Enjoy demonstrations and hands-on activities to leam about the resources available from the buffalo. Visitors will explore the process for tanning hides. Visitors will also watch Jeffers Petroglyphs staff cook in a buffalo stomach and use tools made from the buffalo. July 23, 10 AM - 8 PM Archaeology Discovery Day For those who want or wanted to be an archaeologist, experience a simulated archaeological excavation. July 30, 10 AM - 8 PM Thunder on the Prairie: Understanding Minnesota's Weather Learn some simple weather predicting skills through hands-on activities for all ages. Visitors will learn to understand basic weather terminology and weather charts and also learn about weather folklore. August 6, 10 AM - 8 PM Butterflies are Free: Family Day at Jeffers Petroglyphs Enjoy free admission and explore the world of butterflies. Explore the rock carvings and learn more about the people who made the carvings and the prairie they lived on. Visitors can pack the travois, throw an atlatl and participate in Native American games. August 13, 10 AM - 8 PM Geology Discovery Day Experience the amazing geology of Jeffers Petroglyphs through hands-on activities! A driving tour at 3 PM will be offered to a nearby rock quarry and to the Red Rock Dells. August 20, 8 PM - 12 AM Harvest Moon Visitors will view a brilliant full moon through telescopes and binoculars. Visitors will leam about the moon through hands-on activities and stories from cultures around the world. August 27, 10 AM - 8 PM Prairies, Paint and Pencils Bring your sketchpad and easel and enjoy the beauty of one of Minnesota's most unique praines. There will be artist activities designed for children. Paints and drawing supplies are available at the site. September 3, 10AM - 8PM Prairie Discovery Days September 4, 12PM - 8PM September 5, 10AM - 5PM Explore one of Minnesota's most unique prairies. Hands-on activities and walking tours will lead visitors through the world of prairies. September 10, 10 AM - 5 PM The Native American Religious Freedom Act of 1978 American Indian speakers will discuss the 95 years of US Government policy to eliminate American Indian spiritual beliefs through legal penalties and educational practices and its effect on American Indians today. Free Admission September 17, 10 AM - 5 PM Ehana Woyakpi - "Telling from Way Back": Native American Stories Enjoy American Indian story telling throughout the day with Dakota Elder Joe Campbell. September 24, 10 AM - 5 PM Pretty as a Picture: Prairie Photography Visitors are invited to join local photographer Shelley Olson and receive instruction on photographing prairie plants. Explore landscape, close-up, and lighting techniques. Learn about equipment. Bring your camera and enjoy the beauty of one of Minnesota's most unique prairies. September 30, 9 PM - 12 AM Star Track: the Nightly Path of Constellations October 1, 9 PM -12 AM Come learn about the night sky and its constellations through a slide presentation. Then, as darkness surrounds us, lie on a buffalo robe under the stars and listen to constellation stories from different cultures.
